So, You Want to Be a Student Ambassador?

By Veronica Lewis, ’16 MBA, Associate Director of Admissions

First things first: Who are Student Ambassadors and what do they do?

Depending on the college or university, this job description will vary. At Champlain, our Student Ambassadors (SAs) are the student face and brand ambassadors of the college. They give prospective students and their families tours of campus, answering questions about the college and provide a student’s perspective on what life’s really like in our community. The SAs work closely with the Office of Admissions and assist Admissions Counselors with a variety of projects ranging from executing call campaigns to assisting with writing and mailing efforts. They also represent all grad years and divisions at Champlain, so any student from any major is encouraged to apply. (PS—You do not need to be a master public speaker or give “perfect” tours for this job!)

What will you get out of the position?

  1. Professional Development. You will gain experience executing large events, regularly practice your public speaking skills, learn to collaborate and communicate with more than two dozen fellow ambassadors, and have opportunities for further training and leadership within the team. Additionally, you’ll develop a mindset of continuously learning and adapting in the face of challenges.
  2. Engagement In Your Campus Community. Becoming an SA means you will grow into a student leader through team events and involvement with committees related to service and mentoring fellow Champlain students.
  3. Make Friends and Have Fun. We like to consider ourselves a big family in Admissions. By joining a team of 25 fellow Student Ambassadors from all across the college, you will not only expand your social circle, but also expand your perception of Champlain and have a blast along the way.

What Are We Looking For In an Applicant?

If you’re personable and genuine, have a keen attention to detail, a positive attitude, can maintain grace under pressure, and possess the ability to tell a great story, we’d love to hear from you!  You do not have to be perfectly eloquent to jump right into this public speaking role. However, you do have to be passionate about Champlain and willing and interested to learn!

How can I become a Student Ambassador?
To apply, you must have completed at least one semester at Champlain and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. The application process includes submission of a résumé, written questionnaire, and a multi-step interview process. Hiring occurs each semester with the process beginning in either November or March.
