Champlain’s Career Collaborative: Reimagining Traditional College Career Services

Champlain College’s Career Collaborative helps students prepare for their future from the moment they step on campus all the way through graduation and beyond. Pretty impressive, right?

Career Collaborative works with employers to create the most up-to-date career and personal finance education available for students. They’ll help you get a jump on creating a professional résumé, cover letter and LinkedIn profile, learn how to manage your money, create a budget, and even make a customized student loan repayment plan. Your success is their driving force, and they will help ensure your career readiness for the future.

UNIQUE FEATURES AND INITIATIVES

Career Coaches

One of the unique features that sets Champlain’s Career Collaborative apart from other schools is that each Academic Division has its own division-specific Career Coach, who work with their respective faculty and deans on internships, on-campus recruiting, career education and employer relations. The beauty about each division having its own Career Coach is that the Coach is specialized in that field and has personal connections to employers that they will use to benefit the division they work with.

Every student gets to meet one-on-one with their own Career Coach throughout their four years at Champlain! From career exploration and résumé building to mock interviews and networking, Champlain’s Career Coaches help students with every facet of career education. They will genuinely know about you and your passions and help you make plans to reach your career goals by the time you graduate. They are truly called collaborative for a reason, and that’s comforting for our students!

Career Flagship Program

The Career Flagship Program is exclusive to Champlain College. It offers a one-of-a-kind curriculum in which students learn invaluable career and financial skills. Champlain’s career workshops, called Career SMARTalks, focus on finding internships, interview preparation, mock interviewing with professionals and more. Highly experiential personal finance workshops, called MONEYtalks, prepare students for the important post-graduation milestones: budget management, debt and loan repayment strategies, and salary and compensation package negotiations.

Signature Events

Career Collaborative’s Signature Events are networking events and learning opportunities that happen numerous times throughout each semester. Career Ed*Ventures are off-campus trips organized by Career Collaborative and Champlain’s faculty where students immerse themselves in different companies for a day. Last Fall, a sample of Communication & Creative Media students took a trip to Boston, Massachusetts, to check out Hill Holiday, Mullen Lowe and Trip Advisor.

Furthermore, the Women and Diversity in Games Club was given the opportunity to visit Vicarious Visions in Albany, New York, and 1st Playable in Troy, New York. Most recently, Champlain’s  AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) club visited New York City and met with Vice Magazine as well as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Sean Greenwood, The Grand Poobah/Director of Public Relations at Ben & Jerry’s, speaking at Champlain’s Fall 2016 Career Conference

Twice a year, students have the opportunity to attend Champlain’s Career Conference. This event takes the typical Career Fair and turns it up a few notches! Along with the fair, there are keynote speakers and panels throughout campus, so that students can learn more from professionals in their fields. Last Fall, Champlain had Sean Greenwood, The Grand Poobah/ Director of Public Relations at Ben & Jerry’s as a keynote speaker. At the recent Spring Career Conference, Champlain welcomed Josee Larocque, Senior Vice President of Operations at Burton Snowboards, as the keynote.

Career Collaborative also hosts at least two Mock Interview Days a year. Mock Interview Days bring in professionals from the Burlington community and let students interview with them to gain real-life practical experience. At the end of the interview, employers debrief with students on what worked, what to improve on and learn more about each other. This is a great event for employers and students alike!

Champlain Connect
Champlain’s Career Collaborative works with Institutional Advancement to host a series of Champlain Connect events, which provide networking opportunities for students and alumni in key cities around the country. Champlain Connect is a great way for prospective and current students to meet Champlain alumni and employers in a relaxed setting and begin forming new relationships and connections that last a lifetime.

Champlain’s Career Collaborative is among the most forward-thinking emerging talent consulting teams in higher education and are definitely differentiating themselves (and Champlain) in the ways they continually evolve the College’s career development for students and alumni. As a Champlain student, you have the benefit of learning from their many innovative programs, services and expertise.
